Nissan North America is recalling 509 2017-model year Nissan Versa and Versa Note cars because of potential air bag malfunction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In these subcompact cars, the ring plate that secures the air bag cushion to the passenger frontal air bag assembly may fail. As a result, the air bag might deploy improperly during a crash, NHTSA said.

Nissan dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag module, free of charge. Vehicle owners can reach Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
