Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 79,895 Audi vehicles because they may have been programmed with software that inadvertently makes the side marker lights inoperative in conjunction with the parking lights or headlights, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

Included in the recall are 2016-model year Audi A3 and A3 e-tron vehicles, 2017-MY Audi A4 and Q7 vehicles, and 2015- to 2017-MY Audi Q3 vehicles. The recall also covers 2016-MY Audi TT roadsters and Audi A3 cabriolet cars, along with 2016- to 2017-MY Audi TT coupes.

“If the side marker lights do not illuminate, the vehicle may be less visible at night, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA warned on its website.

To remedy the problem, Audi dealers will upload revised software. There will be no charge for this service.

Vehicle owners can reach Audi customer service at (800) 253-2834. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 97CB.
