Video Tip: Battling Distracted Driving

September 20, 2015

VIDEO: Fletcher's Drive

The leading cause of work-related deaths in the U.S. is vehicle crashes, and the National Safety Council estimates that one-fourth of all crashes involve cell phones.

Research indicates that drivers using handheld or hands-free cell phones are four times more likely to get in a crash, according to NSC. That’s why implementing and enforcing a comprehensive fleet policy for driver cell phone use is so important.

According to NSC, the best cell phone policies cover all employees, all handheld and hands-free devices, all company or agency vehicles, all company or agency mobile phone devices, and all work-related communications – even in personal vehicles or on personal cell phones.

Washington State Gov. Chris Gregoire signed into law legislation that makes talking or texting on cell phones a primary traffic offense. Effective June 10, 2010, the offense commands a $124 fine. DPD requires its drivers pull over safely and stop to answer calls or to use their phones in any matter. Other than when the vehicle is parked, drivers are not permitted to use hands free devices at all. It is a part of our job expectations for all department drivers.
