The 2016 model-year Honda HR-V compact SUV has drawn a 5-Star overall vehicle safety score – the highest possible – from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The vehicle had already received a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The newly announced NHTSA score applies to both AWD and FWD models. The vehicle captured a five-star score in the side crash test and four-star scores in the frontal crash and rollover evaluations.

MGA Research conducted the tests for NHTSA, as part of the agency’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

The 2016 Honda HR-V uses the latest generation of Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which is designed to improve frontal crash energy management, the automaker said.

Standard and available driver-assistance technologies include:

  • SmartVent front side air bags
  • Side curtain air bags with rollover sensor
  • Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH)
  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control
  • Motion-adaptive electric power steering (EPS)
  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Honda LaneWatch (EX, EX-L Navi)
  • Hill Start Assist (HSA)
  • Expanded view driver’s mirror
  • Multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines.

Standard safety equipment on all 2015 Honda models includes the ACE body structure, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control; an anti-lock braking system (ABS); side curtain air bags; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front air bags; and front side air bags.
