Volkswagen AG said it is recalling about 2.6 million vehicles worldwide, including 1.6 million that need replacement of synthetic oil because it can cause damage to dual-clutch gearbox electronics.

Mineral oil is a likely substitute for the synthetic oil. Problems with the gearboxes triggered an earlier recall in China in March, but Volkswagen addressed those issues with a software fix. High temperatures and humidity aggravate the current gearbox problem.

The new recalls also include 800,000 Tiguan compact SUVs to repair light fuses and 239,000 Amarok pickup trucks to fix leaky fuel lines.

The automaker will contact owners affected by the recalls. About one-third of the vehicles involved are in China.

In the U.S., the recalls encompass about 62,000 2009-2011 model-year Tiguan SUVs and 3,900 2013-2014 model-year Jetta hybrids equipped with direct-shift automatic transmissions, the New York Times reported.
