Volvo plans to introduce a number of new safety features in its all-new 2014 XC90, including pedestrian detection in darkness, road edge and barrier detection with steering assistance, and adaptive cruise control with steering assistance. The vehicle also offers a new feature that can help the vehicle avoid colliding with animals, automatically detecting and braking when the system detects an animal in the vehicle’s path (in daytime or nighttime driving conditions).

The pedestrian detection system allows the vehicle to detect pedestrians, and automatically brake if necessary, even in low-light conditions.

The Road edge and barrier detection with steer assist detects whether the vehicle is about to drive off the road and can steer the vehicle back onto it. The technology works on roads without side markings. Next, adaptive cruise control with steer assist helps the driver stay in the lane and allows the vehicle to automatically follow the vehicle ahead.

The new system that can detect animals is set for introduction after the vehicle’s launch in 2014.
