The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said the 2014 Subaru Forester is the first vehicle to earn top scores in the organization’s new small overlap front crash test. IIHS said the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport earned “acceptable” ratings in the test.

These results allow each vehicle to qualify for the IIHS’ new Top Safety Pick+ honor. IIHS added that each of the other 11 SUVs tested in the new small overlap front crash test earned a “poor” or a “marginal” rating.

IIHS said vehicles tested that received a Top Safety Pick level of recognition include the BMW X1 and Buck Encore (new to the U.S. market for 2013, IIHS noted) and the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, the Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, and the 2014 Jeep Patriot. IIHS also tested the Nissan Rogue and Jeep Wrangler 2-door.

The video below details the most recent round of IIHS' testing of 2013-MY small SUVs.
