GHSA Pushing for Highway Safety Program Funding

April 10, 2013

The Governors Highway Safety Association said it is urging President Obama to swiftly sign legislation that fully funds federal behavioral highway safety programs.

The U.S. Congress recently voted to include full funding for the safety programs in the fiscal-year 2013 funding bill.

“The action fully funds critical highway safety programs that were passed in last year's highway bill known as MAP-21,” GHSA said in a statement. “GHSA members will use these funds to keep the public safe from drunk and distracted drivers, encourage seat belt use and improve traffic records programs, among other activities. It also provides critically needed funding for research on advanced impaired driving detection technology.”

MAP-21 is an acronym for Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century. Map-21 includes a State and Community Highway Safety grant program, as well as a National Priority Safety Program.
