Polaris Industries Inc. is recalling 4,394 Global Electric Motorcars (GEMs) manufactured from Jan. 14, 2010, through Nov. 23, 2012, to fix the parking brakes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

In these vehicles, the parking brake has mechanical components that may wear prematurely and prevent the brake from engaging, NHTSA said. This condition poses the risk of the vehicle rolling away when it’s parked.

The recall covers 2010-2013 MY GEM E2, 2010-2011 MY GEM E2 XLD, 2010-2011 GEM E2L, 2010-2011 and 2013 MY GEM E2S, 2010-2013 MY GEM E4, 2012-2013 MY GEM E4S, 2010-2013 MY E6, 2012-2013 MY GEM E6S, 2012-2013 MY GEM EL, 2012-2013 MY ELXD, and 2012 MY GEM ES electric cars.

Polaris dealers will replace the parking brake lever assembly in these vehicles free of charge. This safety recall is expected to begin Feb. 4. Vehicle owners can reach Polaris at 1-888-704-5290.
