WASHINGTON - Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling more than 3,400 model-year 2008-2011 Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans equipped with the optional three-seat bench in the passenger compartment.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the seat benches in the second seating row may have been equipped with safety belts that fail to meet federal safety standards. The seat belts may not lock properly, and the assembly loop may not perform to minimum force requirements. As a result, the safety belts may not properly restrain passengers in the event of a crash.

Mercedes-Benz will inspect and replace any seat belt assemblies that fail to meet safety standards. There will be no charge for the service. The safety recall is expected to get under way in May.

Owners can reach Mercedes-Benz at (843) 695-5000.
