WASHINGTON - BMW of North America is recalling more than 198,300 vehicles because of a potential power assist braking problem.

The safety recall affects certain MY 2004-2010 5-Series, MY 2004-2010 6-Series and MY 2002-2008 7-Series vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

A check valve of the brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil. Over time, this could result in contamination of the brake booster. As a result, power assist braking performance could be adversely affected. In extreme cases, there could be a complete loss of power assist braking. This condition poses a safety risk.

Vehicle owners can reach BMW at (800) 525-7417.

For reference purposes, this safety campaign has been assigned No. 10V446000.
