WASHINGTON, D.C. --- TRW Automotive Inc. is recalling 2,586 Igen3 intermediate steering columns that were shipped to various vehicle manufacturers between April 21 and May 26 of this year for use as original or replacement equipment on heavy trucks.

The weld around the Igen3 steering shaft tube that secures the spline tube to the intermediate tube may be mislocated -- for example, not fully over the seam created when the tubes are pressed together. This condition may result in torsional and axial strength falling below acceptable levels, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Separation of the steering column could result and lead to loss of steering control.

To remedy the problem, each vehicle manufacturer affected by the recall will provide a resolution plan and notification schedule. The vehicles affected will be repaired without charge to the owners. The recall begins this month.

Vehicle owners can reach NHTSA at (888) 327-4236.
