Coach & Equipment Recalls Nearly 600 Phoenix Paratransit Buses

September 24, 2008

Coach & Equipment Manufacturing Corp., a bus manufacturer based in Penn Yan, N.Y., is recalling 594 MY 2005-2007 Phoenix paratransit buses equipped with Ricon platform-style wheelchair lifts.

The lifts fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said. The threshold warning system "may not detect the presence of a wheelchair or mobility aid user in a certain spot within the defined threshold area," the NHTSA said. As a result, a lift user could be injured if the lift moves unintentionally.

Coach & Equipment is working with Ricon to remedy the problem free of charge to bus owners. Bus owners affected can call Ricon at (818) 267-3000 or Coach & Equipment at (315) 536-2321 for more details.
