Missouri Body Shops Lobby for Anti-Steering Legislation

December 20, 2007

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. --- A coalition of auto repair shops has launched a lobbying campaign aimed at passing new state legislation in Missouri.Senate Bill 775 seeks to promote consumers' right to choose their own repair facility and prohibits steering by auto insurance companies. Another bill, Senate Bill 868, would prohibit the misuse of estimating databases. Insurance companies would be required to closely follow a repair manual when appraising a damaged vehicle. Both bills were prefiled by Sen. Wes Shoemyer, CollisionWeek reported.A third bill --- requiring damage appraisers to write full and accurate appraisals the first time, to the best of their ability --- is also expected to be filed, CollisionWeek reported. If the bills pass, violations would be considered an unfair trade practice.
