Mississippi Patrol Blitz Leads to Decline in Highway Deaths Over Holiday

November 29, 2007

JACKSON, Miss. --- Staging one of the biggest traffic enforcement patrols in state history, the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol recorded fewer traffic deaths during the seven days of Thanksgiving travel than the same period in 2006. Over the seven-day period, three people died on state roads, compared to five fatalities in 2006 and eight in 2005.From 6 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, through the end of Sunday at midnight, the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol handed out 14,785 citations, including 154 DUI arrests and 333 seat-belt violations, the Clarion Ledger reported. That's 3,189 more citations than the same period last year. The agency is planning a similar traffic law enforcement blitz over Christmas.
