Uphill Braking Problem Spurs Chrysler SUV Recall

September 20, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Chrysler said it plans to recall nearly 300,000 SUVs because of possible braking problems drivers might encounter while traveling uphill. The recall affects more than 156,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Commander SUVs from the 2006-2007 model years, more than 90,000 2007 Jeep Wrangler SUVs and nearly 50,000 2007 Dodge Nitro SUVs.There has been one crash associated with the issue, but no injuries reported, a Chrysler spokesman told the Associated Press. The automaker received about 20 complaints from drivers who experienced a delay in braking when they tried to come to a stop after coasting uphill. To correct the problem, mechanics will reprogram the computer connected to the antilock brake system. Chrysler also said it was recalling 72,333 Dodge Avenger sedans and Sebring convertibles from the 2008 model year to fix problems related to the front door latches and locks. No accidents or injuries have been reported, but the automaker has discovered problems associated with opening vehicle doors through the internal monitoring program. Vehicle owners will be notified next month.
