Nissan Recalls Nearly 420,000 SUVs

September 27, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Nissan is recalling nearly 420,000 sport utility vehicles because of possible corrosion in the tube where motorists pump gas. The recall involves 1997-2001 Nissan Pathfinders and Infiniti QX4 SUVs from the 1997-2001 model years. More than 370,000 of the vehicles being recalled were originally sold or are now registered in 22 states known for their cold winter weather, along with the District of Columbia. Another 45,000 vehicles are in Canada. These locations see heavy snowfall and local authorities often use salt to help maintain roads during winter months. But if a vehicle's fuel filler tube isn't properly coated to resist corrosion, contact with the road salt and snow can result in corrosion and perforation of the fuel filler tube. That can lead to fuel leakage during refueling, which poses a fire threat, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said. The recall will begin in November. The 22 states involved are Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, reported. The recall also involves the District of Columbia.
