$4 Million Award in Fleet Truck Accident Caused by BlackBerry Use

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL – A badly injured 71-year-old Arlington Heights woman will get $4.1 million because a van driver last year ran a red light and crashed into her while he was looking down at his BlackBerry, according to the Fleet Alert newsletter. An employee of Berry Electric Contracting Co., was lost and using his BlackBerry’s navigation device to try to find his destination, it emerged during interviews leading up to the trial in the case.The woman underwent five surgeries, including two on her neck, where she lost a range of motion.The trial was set to start Dec. 1, when the parties agreed to a settlement.
