Volkswagen led the way with 10 vehicle honors in the third annual Vincentric Best Value in Canada awards announced Oct. 1.

Other individual automaker winners included Toyota earning Best Value Passenger Vehicle Brand, while Audi took home the Best Value Luxury Brand award and Chevrolet earned Best Value Truck Brand.

Alternative fuel played a role with the winning brands, as 16 awards were earned by diesel and hybrid vehicles. Diesel-powered Audi vehicles won three awards, while Volkswagen TDI models came away with four awards.

Additionally, three diesel BMW vehicles earned awards, and Toyota won three of the five hybrid-specific vehicle segments. The diversity of General Motors line-up was evident with award-winning vehicles in the passenger car, SUV, and pickup truck categories Ford Motor Company, American Honda Motor Company, and Mazda Motor Corporation each took home three awards.

To determine the 2014 Vincentric Best Value in Canada awards, Vincentric analyzed over 1,800 vehicle configurations measuring cost-of-ownership using eight different cost factors: depreciation, fees and taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost, and repairs, according to the firm.

Using a statistical model, the company identified the Vincentric Best Value in Canada winners by measuring which vehicles had lower than expected ownership costs given their market segment and price. Each vehicle was evaluated in all ten provinces plus the Northwest Territories using a range of annual kilometer intervals and insurance profiles.
