Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy has signed into law a bill that prohibits insurance companies, as well as their third-party claims adjusters and administrators, from steering auto policyholders to a specific glass repair shop.

The new law, which will become effective Jan. 1, 2014, also bans insurance representatives from telling policyholders that if they use a glass repair facility outside of the insurer’s network, the repair work will take longer or will not be guaranteed.

While servicing such a claim, insurance representatives also can’t recommend by name, or set an appointment for, a glass repair facility that the insurance company owns.

Instead, the law stipulates that policyholders should be told they have the right to choose the licensed glass shop where the damage will be repaired.
