Nissan is introducing a gasoline-electric hybrid Rogue compact SUV for 2017 that's expected to deliver 35 mpg on the highway, Nissan has announced.

Nissan is debuting the vehicle at the Miami International Auto Show alongside a refreshed gasoline-powered Rogue. The Rogue Hybrid should also provide 33 mpg in the city and 34 mpg in combined driving cycles.

The hybrid Rogue would seem to target the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid introduced with the 2016 model year as a rare non-luxury hybrid compact SUV. Subaru offers the XV Crosstrek Hybrid crossover and Lexus offers the NX300h luxury compact SUV.

The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid earned an EPA-rated 31 mpg on the highway, 34 mpg in the city, and 33 mpg combined. The 2016 Crosstrek Hybrid gets an EPA-rated 34 mpg on the highway, 30 mpg in the city, and 31 mpg combined.

Nissan's 2017 Rogue Hybrid pairs a new 2.0L four-cylinder gasoline engine that makes 141 hp and 144 lb.-ft. of torque with an electric motor that makes 40 hp. Net system output should come in at 176 hp. The vehicle also employs an automatic stop-start system, regenerative braking, and a dual-clutch transmission to increase efficiency.

The gasoline-powered Rogue returns with the 2.5L four-cylinder that makes 170 hp.

Nissan will offer the 2017 Rogue Hybrid in the SV or SL trim levels with standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive late in the model year. The gasoline Rogue will also be available in the S base model.

Other updates for 2017 include new standard safety equipment such as intelligent cruise control, forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning and rear-cross-traffic alerting for the SV grade, and high-beam assist headlights for the SL grade.
