The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid has been rated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to achieve 47 mpg in the city, which would put it atop mid-size hybrid sedans.

The Malibu Hybrid, which is debuting with the 2016-MY, also achieves 46 mpg on the highway and 46 mpg in combined driving cycles.

The ratings would make the vehicle more fuel efficient than several competitors in all cycles, except for highway where the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid gets 48 mpg. Toyota Prius models are considered compact cars.

The 2016 Malibu Hybrid starts at $28,645 (including destination charge) and is based on the LT trim. It shares many of its attributes with the gasoline Malibu, which was redesigned for 2016 and features a longer wheelbase to enhance comfort. GM took out nearly 300 pounds in a light-weighting initiative to improve driving feel and fuel economy.

Standard features include Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and access to select phone apps such as music, maps and others from MyLink’s 7-inch color touch screen.

Malibu Hybrid offers 10 airbags, a rear-view camera, cruise control and push-button start with passive entry. Additional active safety features offered include Lane Keep Assist, Front Pedestrian Braking, Rear Vision Camera and Low Speed Automatic Braking.
