Hero BX to Bolster Biodiesel Production

November 15, 2009

ERIE, PA --- Hero BX, a biofuel producer formerly known as Lake Erie Biofuels, said it has won a $1.64 million grant to expand its biodiesel production by 10 million gallons a year, American Agriculturalist reported.

Hero BX expects to raise its annual output of biodiesel from 45 million gallons to 55 million gallons. The grant money is federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act dollars funneled through Pennsylvania's Green Energy Works! Program.

"We anticipate that we'll be producing 20 to 25 percent of our biodiesel using the second-generation feedstock camelina within the next two to three years, CEO Leonard Kosar said. Currently, most of the biodiesel produced at the company's plant comes from waste soybean and food oils and biodegradable greases.

"Unlike many other companies that are simply developing technologies to use second- and third-generation feedstocks to produce biofuels someday, we're profitably producing biofuels today," Kosar said.
