Novatel Wireless, Inc., a global provider of solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT), including software-as-a-service (SaaS), has announced that it has signed a partnership with the Cameroon National Taxi Union. Novatel is to provide Ctrack vehicle tracking and driver behavior monitoring to the taxi industry in the Republic of Cameroon.

Taxis are one of the primary modes of transportation across the African continent. In Cameroon alone, taxis transport over 8 million commuters daily. The agreement is one of the country’s first steps towards implementing tracking legislation. Future legislation will mandate all Cameroon taxi operators have vehicle tracking units installed, according to the company.

“Ctrack shares our commitment of creating safer roads for all and it shows through the quality of their technology and analytics,” said Augustin Ngangoua, national president of the Cameroon National Taxi Union. “This initiative will not only improve the safety of drivers and passengers, but also other road users and the public in general. Through Ctrack’s commitment, we will engage in talks with the Transport Ministry to enforce the installation of GPS tracking units into all taxis.”

The multi-year agreement will enable the government of Cameroon to provide GPS vehicle tracking, safety, and compliance solutions to its more than 100,000 taxis currently operating on the country’s roads, according to the company.
