Volvo Cars will roll out plug-in hybrids across its entire lineup and develop a battery-electric passenger for sale by 2019, the automaker has announced.

Volvo expects electrified vehicles to account for as much as 10% of its car sales by 2020, according to a release.

As a first step, Volvo will introduce plug-in hybrid version of its 90 series and 60 series larger cars. Volvo has introduced a PHEV model of its redesigned XC90 flagship luxury SUV. Volvo's S90 luxury sedan will be the next PHEV model released. Volvo refers to its PHEV models as Twin Engine vehicles.

Plug-in hybrid cars offer customers "the best combination of efficiency, range and convenience," according to the company.
