The Australian prime minister has ordered a fleet of bombproof BMW 7 Series sedans to protect leaders during this year's G20 summit, BMW has confirmed.

BMW Group Australia acknowledged the purchase of nine BMW 760Li security sedans with identical engineering and performance specifications. The vehicles cost $6.2 million and can withstand AK-47 fire, attacks with explosive devices, and armor-piercing rounds.

The vehicles include features such as a self-sealing fuel tank, an alarm to alert for attacks, and an intercop that allows occupants to communicate externally from inside the vehicle.

The fleet replaces older Holden vehicles, a spokesman with Prime Minister Tony Abbot's office told the Daily Telegraph.
