Fleet fuel card provider WEX, Inc. has begun construction on a new headquarters in Portland, Maine that will provide 100,000 square feet of space in a four-story mixed-use development, the city has announced.

WEX is building the office at the corner of Hancock and Thames Street in Portland, and will relocate its existing headquarters from the nearby city of South Portland.

"We are excited about breaking ground on our new headquarters in Portland, which reinforces WEX's commitment to Maine for decades to come," said Bernie Kavanagh, senior vice president and general manager of North America large fleet and strategic relationships for WEX. "Eventually, this site will be home to at least 450 of our employees across all lines of business, including WEX Fleet — with the potential for another 200 as we continue to grow and expand."

On Aug. 21, the Portland City Council approved a $3.3 million agreement with 0 Hancock Street LLC to sell the city-owned parcel along the eastern waterfront. The parcel measures 48,000 square feet. The city had issued a Request for Proposals in April and received two responses on May 3.

City officials and WEX associates hosted a ground-breaking ceremony on Oct. 24.
