SOUTHFIELD, MIWardsAuto released its 10 Best Engines list for 2013. The publication stated that for the first time in seven years, the list features only gasoline-fueled engines. Ward’s noted its editors found innovations in fuel efficiency and refinement.

The awards recognize powertrain technologies that are affordable, improve performance, are efficient, and match their respective vehicles well. The publication’s editors chose the engines after test driving more than 40 vehicles. They based engine scores on actual observed fuel economy and driving performance.

Eligible engines must be available in a regular production U.S.-specification vehicle that has a base price below $55,000. Ward’s said winners from the 2012 competition were automatically eligible and that editors evaluated them against new engines for 2013.
