WASHINGTON – The U.S. Energy Dept. has announced $8 million in funding for seven projects to create lighter and stronger materials for U.S. vehicles. The projects focus on improving carbon fiber composites, creating advanced steels, and creating advanced alloys for automotive and heavy-duty vehicle engines.

"With strong, lightweight materials we have an opportunity to dramatically increase vehicle fuel economy, while helping America maintain its competitive edge in automotive design and manufacturing," said Secretary Chu.

Funding includes $6 million to the United States Materials Partnership to develop new modeling tools to advance third-generation high-strength steels and $1 million to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to validate carbon fiber composite materials.
