June 11, 2007

SHERBROOKE, Quebec, Canada -- Premier Jean Charest is committing $6 million in public funds to research and develop ethanol made from agricultural and urban waste. Another $19 million will come from the private sector and the University of Sherbrooke, according to Quebec's Liberal government is seeking to have 5 percent ethanol content in gasoline used in the province by 2012. Charest said that step, combined with a carbon tax that takes effect this fall, will help the province meet its targets in reducing greenhouse gases.
