NAFA Reports Possible Retrofit Requirements for Commercial Fleets in California

April 04, 2007

DIAMOND BAR, CA – Commercial fleets with diesel vehicles in California may be required to retrofit existing diesel vehicles, as currently is the case for Public Agency and utility vehicle fleets, according to the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA). The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has scheduled public workshops for Apr. 11 and 17 to discuss developing a control measure to reduce diesel particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from private fleets of on-road heavy-duty diesel-fueled vehicles. The commercial fleet measure includes, but is not limited to, long- and short-haul truck-tractors, construction related trucks, port hauling trucks, wholesale and retail goods transport trucks, tanker trucks, package and household goods transport trucks, and any other diesel-powered trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 lbs. or greater. Current California regulations mandate Public Agency and utility vehicle fleets to reduce diesel PM emissions through the application of Best Available Control Technology or BACT on these vehicles by specified implementation dates. Implementation is phased in by engine model-year groups. More information on the workshops is available at or by contacting NAFA’s U.S. Legislative Counsel Patrick O’Connor at [email protected]
