Hybrid Sales Up 28 Percent in 2006

DETROIT --- Sales of gas-electric hybrid vehicles in the U.S. rose 28 percent in 2006, according to data from R.L. Polk & Co.A total of 254,545 hybrids were sold last year. In 2005, consumers bought 199,148. Hybrids represented about 1.5 percent of U.S. vehicle sales in 2006, with the Toyota Prius accounting for 42.8 percent of those registrations. The second biggest hybrid seller was Toyota's hybrid version of its Highlander SUV.
