Enterprise Donates $25 Million to Biofuel Research

March 01, 2007

CHICAGO – Enterprise Rent-a-Car said its owner has donated $25 million to the St. Louis-based Donald Danforth Plant Science Center to fund biofuel research. The donation from the car rental company's founder Jack Taylor follows an earlier gift of $10 million and completes the non-profit center's campaign. It was launched in 2004, to raise $100 million to fund research into commercially viable alternative fuels from plants.Enterprise was founded in 1957 and is still owned by the Taylor family.Other donations include $7.5 million from crop biotechnology company Monsanto Co., also based in St. Louis. The new research center will be called the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Institute for Renewable Fuels.Enterprise announced last October that it would give $1 million annually toward planting 1 million trees every year for the next 50 years.A spokesman for Enterprise said the donations to the Danforth Center and the tree-planting program were part of a broader strategy to become more environmentally friendly and find alternatives to fossil fuels.Enterprise operates a fleet of more than 878,000 vehicles worldwide and had revenue of more than $9 billion in 2006.
