California Bill Seeks to Penalize Buyers of Gas Guzzlers

February 26, 2007

SACRAMENTO --- California Assemblyman Ira Ruskin has introduced a bill that would make consumers in the state pay as much as $2,500 extra to buy gas guzzlers like muscle cars, SUVs and pickup trucks. The bill proposes that monies collected from the penalty would be used to provide rebates to buyers of new hybrids and other low-emitting vehicles, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. The bill, which has already stirred plenty of controversy, proposes the discount to take effect with new cars in the 2011 model year. Ranging from $100 to $2,500, the rebates would be based on state calculations of carbon emissions.
