Las Vegas City Fleet Now 87 Percent Alt-Fuel

November 16, 2006

LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Eighty-seven percent of Las Vegas' city fleet now operates on some form of alternative fuel, such as hydrogen, biodiesel or natural gas. Dan Hyde, the city's transportation manager, is largely responsible for the city's transition to alternative fuel, according to a report by Kitsap Sun. "We need to do this for the environment but also to minimize our dependence on foreign oil," he told the newspaper. The fleet numbers 1,500 vehicles, including two Honda FCXs being used for testing purposes. The FCXs get about 150 miles to a tankful and must be refueled at the city's garage. A second hydrogen fueling site, however, is planned.
