18 Ethanol Plants Planned for Indiana

November 10, 2006

MORGAN COUNTY, Ind. --- Indiana's Department of Agriculture reports that 18 ethanol plants are either in their planning stages or already under construction in the state. According to a report in Reporter-Times, the ethanol production ranges from 40 to 220 million gallons annually. One of these projects, headed by Heartland Renewable Fuels, is now conducting studies. The company has worked closely with Morgan County's Purdue Extension office to estimate how much fuel a plant could produce in south central Indiana. Heartland has already found a customer for distiller grains, a byproduct of ethanol production that's fed to livestock. Concern over byproducts is one of the issues these companies face.
