LANSING, MI – The Michigan Senate on Sept. 19 unanimously approved Truck Renting and Leasing Association- (TRALA) initiated legislation, House Bill 6031, that would extend indefinitely the state’s moratorium on enforcement of the commercial truck lessor/lessee fuel tax joint and several liability law. The joint and several liability law, established many years prior to Michigan’s entrance into the International Fuel Tax Agreement, exists as part of the Michigan Motor Carrier Fuel Tax Act (MMCFTA) and holds a lessor responsible for unpaid fuel tax owed by a lease customer. Having already been approved by the Michigan House of Representatives June 29, HB 6031 is now headed to Gov. Jennifer Granholm to be officially signed into law.
