Michigan City Makes Hybrid Vehicles Exempt from City Parking Fees

September 08, 2006

FERNDALE, Mich. --- The Ferndale City Council last month voted to exempt a list of fuel-efficient cars from city parking fees. The decision's intent is to encourage residents to buy more environmentally friendly vehicles. Such incentives are becoming more popular in cities. But Ferndale officials believe theirs is the first city in Michigan to adopt such a policy. At an annual cost of $8, Ferndale residents who drive hybrids or high-mileage vehicles can hang a permit from their rear-view mirror and ignore the parking meters when parking in the city. Non-residents can do the same for a cost of $25 per year, according to a report in the C&G News.Qualifying cars must have a manufacturer's estimate of at least 30 miles per gallon when driving on city streets.
