San Diego Station Offers Wide Selection of Alt-Fuels
SAN DIEGO --- Pearson Ford Fuel Depot just might provide a glimpse at fuel stations of the future. Part of a dealership, this station offers a range of clean-burning alternative fuels -- from ethanol to propane to BioWillie, a brand of biodiesel promoted by country music legend Willie Nelson. According to an AP story that ran in the San Jose Mercury News, the station isn't yet profitable. But that could change if rising gasoline prices and environmental concerns prompt greater use of alternative fuels. As co-owner Mike Lewis pointed out, San Diego's gasoline prices are among the highest in the nation. The station looks like any other, except there are pumps labeled "E85" and "compressed gas" as well as recharging stations for electric cars. On June 5 at the station, regular unleaded gasoline sold for $3.29 a gallon, while diesel sold for $3.24, E85 for $3.09, biodiesel for $3.29 and natural gas for $2.39, according to the AP report.
