Virginia Senate Considers New Gas Tax

February 24, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. --- The Virginia State Senate is considering a bill that would impose a 5 percent hike in the wholesale gas tax in order to raise $500 million annually for state transportation projects, according to a report in the Washington Post. What's particularly unusual about the bill is that consumers would qualify for rebates of the tax passed along to them, provided they submitted their gas purchase receipts twice a year. Business fleets, however, would not qualify for the rebate. Some critics of the bill have scoffed at the prospect of state employees having to sift through hundreds of thousands of tiny gas receipts to process the consumer rebates. The Senate Finance Committee passed the bill last week.
