NYC Prepares for Experiment With Hybrid Taxis

July 26, 2005

NEW YORK — The New York City taxi commission is in the process of selecting one or two hybrid taxicab models to test, after the city council passed a bill allowing the use of hybrid vehicles, reported the Associated Press. It is not certain how large the fleet of New York hybrid cabs will be. New York currently has a fleet of 12,760 yellow cabs. Some estate that if the entire New York City taxicab fleet were converted to less polluting gasoline-electric hybrids, it would be the equivalent of taking 24,000 cars off the road.
