Heavy-Duty Hybrid: EPA Seeks Definition
— According to industry sources, the EPA will soon help the industry define what constitutes a heavy-duty hybrid vehicle. The goal is helping builders and operators of heavy-duty hybrids qualify for incentives to help establish a market. The EPA is now working on a plan to reconcile existing test regimes that focus on engines with the need to recognize the overall merits of hybrid vehicles — without shifting the burden of testing to hybrid vehicle builders, reported Fleets & Fuels. The pending program will most likely be patterned on the agency’s voluntary Diesel Retrofit Program, whereby states funding clean vehicle projects can get State Implementation Plan credit under the Clean Air Act.
