Ohio Aims for First Public H2 Fuel Site in U.S.

September 19, 2002

The State of Ohio plans to open the first public hydrogen fueling station in the United States, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Ohio is proposing to build four of the alternative fuel stations, which will provide a supply of hydrogen extracted by reformer from natural gas piped to the station. Each station will offer three hydrogen pumps and three compressed natural gas pumps. While there are few fuel cell vehicles on the road, and currently none in Ohio, the State says it is undertaking the project to help promote public awareness of alternative fuel vehicles, and to stake out a place in the front line of fuel cell vehicle development. The new fuel station will resemble a typical convenience store gas station, but will offer a learning center complete with a theater and education booths, instead of snacks and merchandise. AltFuel Solutions of Toledo, Ohio is managing the project, and has received initial state funding on the $6.8 million project.
