Conoco to Spend $146 Million in Oklahoma Refinery to Produce Cleaner Gasoline

May 30, 2002

Conoco will spend $146 million to improve the company’s Ponca City, OK, refinery to produce gasoline that meets the low-sulfur gasoline standards mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 2 rules. Starting Jan. 1, 2004, companies are required to reduce the amount of sulfur sold in the U.S., reaching no more than 30 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur in 2005. Jim Nokes, executive vice president for Conoco, said the Ponca City refinery will be the first of four Conoco refineries in the U.S. whose sulfur content will be reduced since it produces 50 percent of the company’s U.S. gasoline supply.
