Fleet FAQ? Fleet Tracking and Telematics

Q. What happens if the driver needs more than 8 days in a rental truck and the ELD is not compatible with their truck?

April 4, 2018, by Todd Ewing - Also by this author

A. In December, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration granted a 90-day waiver for short-term truck rentals exceeding 8 days. The waiver will allow those renting trucks for 30 days or less to use paper logs to record their hours of service (HOS). The waiver will be in effect until April 19, 2018.

The waiver can only be used once during the exemption period. The waiver and all of its conditions can be viewed here. (https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2018-01-19/pdf/2018-00843.pdf)

The purpose of the waiver, which was requested by the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) was to give time for truck renting and leasing companies to comply with the ELD mandate.
