NHTSA to Study Alleged Steering Problem in Sonata
WASHINGTON - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun investigating whether the MY 2011 Hyundai Sonata's steering shaft assembly has a defect that can lead to separation and a loss of steering capability, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The NHTSA probe is also looking into whether a bolt in the steering system can become loose. The investigation will determine whether a safety recall is at all warranted.
No reported injuries or crashes have been linked to the steering-control complaints, and Hyundai said it is fully cooperating with NHTSA in its investigation. A spokesman for the automaker said the company has received only two reports of a steering problem and those Sonatas were repaired at the dealerships.
The safety probe involves Sonatas manufactured in Alabama that had fewer than 600 miles at the time of the alleged incidents, NHTSA said.
