Expanded Audi R Range Back on the Table

INGOLSTADT, GERMANY – Rumors of the demise of the R4 may have been premature, as a new report indicates that not only is it still in the works, but it will be joined by a range of R models. The new R4 is expected to ride on the same platform that underpins the next-gen Porsche Boxster and Cayman, while a slightly larger R6 and a road-going R10 are also on the books, according to www.motorauthority.com.

The R4 is expected to be powered by a 335hp (250kW) 2.5L turbo and supercharged five-cylinder engine (also expected for the TT-RS) in the range topper, while the entry model will likely get a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder, lending some weight to the assertions that Porsche may offer a Boxster/Cayman with a similar engine configuration, the report said. A six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch unit are expected to play the leading roles in the transmission department.

Details on the R6 are yet unknown. The V-12 TDI R8 diesel concept may be finally coming to production as well, in the guise of an R10. Audi R vehicles might hit the streets starting in 2011 with the R4, according to www.motorauthority.com.

Migration to 4-Cylinder Engines Continues with 2010-MY Ordering

By Mike Antich
The ongoing volatility of gasoline prices has prompted a growing number of fleets to transition to four-cylinder engines. This transition started in the 2008-MY and accelerated with 2009-MY ordering, when gas prices surpassed $4 per gallon in the summer of 2008. Early indications are that the migration to four-cylinder engines will continue with 2010-MY ordering. We have already seen glimpses of this trend in the 2010 RFPs submitted to major OEMs.
